It all began in Boston with a meeting of 17 like-minded women who had defied society’s standards by earning college degrees. What started out as the Association of Collegiate Alumnae has grown into a network of women who have influenced—and at times even shaped—the debate over equity in education.
Since its first meeting in 1881, AAUW has been a catalyst for change. Today, with more than 100,000 members, 1,300 branches, and 500 college and university partners, AAUW contributes to a more promising future and provides a powerful voice for women and girls.
Members hold an associate's or equivalent, bachelor's, or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Branch members also belong to the national organization.
AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class.
