a career conference for

6th-7th-8th grade girls

 

AAUW and Schreiner University will sponsor a career conference entitled "Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science" for young girls in the Hill Country area on Saturday, November 21,2009, on the Schreiner campus.  The conference is designed to introduce girls in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades to careers in mathematics, science and related disciplines. This is an annual event with over 250 girls attending  last  year’s conference

 

The goals of the EYH conference are to  

       1)  increase young women's interest in science and math;

       2)  foster awareness of career opportunities for women in math

           and science related fields;

      3)  provide students with an opportunity to meet and form

           personal contacts with women in nontraditional

            occupations.

 

Sessions for the girls will, depending on availability of facilitators, discuss careers in:

 medicine       genetics       dentistry  veterinary  medicine

 computer science      psychology      landscape design 

 physical therapy      statistics     engineering

 speech pathology          forensic science      pharmacy 

 infection control     microbiology          nursing        and others.

 

Parent Sessions:

Parents are encouraged to support their daughters as they attend this conference.  Special discussion sessions for parents will be available during the morning.  Topics may include recommended high school course choices  to enhance college opportunities, college financing,

and other parenting issues important to you as your daughter begins to consider career options.
